What determines a n00b in Pokemon?

So I was thinking about this question the other day: What determines if someone is a n00b in Pokemon and competitive battling?

The term n00b is tossed around the gaming world to mean someone with out skill, although it is derived from the word newbie, meaning a new player. Now in Pokemon would the determination of someone's skill be based on simply the Pokemon they choose to use, or how they use them? I know that someone can use Pokemon from higher tiers and completely fail in the utilization of those Pokemon so the answer in this case would probably be "the utilization".

But let me give another example: My friend has always favored Ice and Water type Pokemon (and a Pinsir). People may look at his team and say "that team is totally dumb, etc., etc." But my question is, "If he knows how to utilize his team to the best of their abilities (IV's and EV's, abilities, moves, etc.) and has planned out strategies around them, then is he still a n00b for his Pokemon selection?" Please discuss. I would like to hear from what others have to say.

There is a difference between noobs and newbs. Newbs are just new but they do try to learn. Noobs think they know everything when they really are no good at what they are doing and they try to put you down for correcting them. I wouldn't see your friend as a noob if he knows how to make the best of his pokemon and he actually understands that it's not the best selection but likes using them anyways.I would see it as a noob thing if he thought that it was a great selection and expected to own everybody no problem without any sort of strategy.

So I'm a noob for using that shiny raikou? It'd be better to say ubers. Noobs use ubers.

i did say, "but some legends aren't uber" to which he said "no even if they're not they're still n00bish" so then i was talking about non-legend Ubers and saying they aren't n00bish

I have noticed some common n00b teams -

Charizard, Garchomp, Dialga, Palkia, Darkrai, and Giratina

(charizard isn't for n00bs, but I see alot of n00bs using them)

because 5 of them are ubers, though only 4 are legends

and true some n00bs use charizard because in my opinion they don't know about "Stealth Rock"

And I know some great people who use Charizard, they ain't noobs, but most noobs are obsessed with Charizard.

Thats because it was so powerful, especially in the anime, but noobs don't know about stealth rock.

yea it was great pre-gen 4 or before stealth rock was competitive

But n00bs these days don't know what has happened to Charizard.

yea they don't even do their research on the metagame and the importance of moves like stealth rock

They don't care about stat raising moves.

They're like i was 2 years ago when i hadn't even heard of evs and my pokemon were purely offensive.

I used to be a huge noob actually.

Yep, i guess we were all noobs at one time whether we knew it or not.
